I recently got a killer deal on a SpeedAire 5F563 (Two Stage Stationary Air Compressor, 7-1/2 horsepower, Vertical Tank, 230 volt at 60 Hertz, 30 Amp, 33 inches x 25 inches x 81-1/2 inches).

The thing cost about $3,000 new so I couldn't pass up the deal I got on it. Only thing is that it came with no users manual on how to hook the darn thing up and I'm not familiar with stuff like that. I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me get on the right track to get this thing hooked up so I can really get started on my CJ7 project.

I took a few pics, maybe someone can tell how to hook it up from the pictures. If not maybe if anyone is close to the ravines wouldn't mind coming over and helping me get it hooked up.

Anyways on to the pictures:

This is the power box off the side of the motor

This is the wiring that comes from the Pressure Regulator

Here is a ball valve on the side of the tank... I'm guessing this is where I'll hook up the air hose/hoses?

If anyone knows how to wire one of these things please let me know. I need to get this thing running so me and my daughter can get started on the bodywork for the jeep and this would be a HUGE help.

its a single phase duel voltage motor I think?? Never have seen one like that im used to three phase 480v 12lead or 9 lead motors. I would have to come look at it Im sure I could figure it out quickly just hard to do from a pic. take a pic of the tag on the motor

I got it all figured out... City electric is supposed to have my 30/30 ITE breaker in today so I can install a 220 outlet in the garage. Compressor is already wired up, just needs to be plugged in :)

check but that pressure switch may not be rated for the motor amps... mine wasn't i had to get a big relay to handle the power... if someone took it off of that it may explain why your wires are cut on the motor and the ones off the switch werent.

i think those little switches are only rated at 3hp

Switches have ratings like everything else and your switch looks a little small. You don't want to know how STK's is hooked up.

well it's not building pressure now... it runs and pumps but pressure dont go above 40psi. I think its the head gasket. I'm going to tear it down tomorrow and see what's wrong. Hopefully it's a simple fix because a new one from grainger is $850

Maybe that is why it was such a killer deal.

Maybe, maybe not. Things do happen. It ran fine for over a week. I'm thinking it could be a reed valve. Anyhow at $150 it's still a good deal. I can always put a new pump on it if I need to, there are cheaper alternatives than the dayton pump. I'm prob going to replace the pressure switch with one that holds 25amps. I'm sure it's just something simple, all air compressors require maintenance and this one was built in 1993 so I'm sure it's due for some.

On a side note: I wonder if you could mount a York and use that? Would the electric motor be able to drive it?

Yea if you search youtube for homemade compressors I think there is a couple videos of people doing that.

Thanks for pointing that out, I am getting a switch rated for 30amps since that's what the motor puts out. Will be tearing it down tomorrow most likely. I think its a gasket or reed valve because it does build some pressure.

Got it tore down and metal all over the place! I thought the worst but the Valve Plate Assembly just broke. Instead of using Reed Valves this uses a plate with them integrated I guess? It's only going to cost $140.49 for the parts to fix it and then she will be good as new. So $300 in the air compressor when it was over $3000 new, I still think I got a great deal :P

Soon as I get paid this week I'll order that parts to fix the compressor pump, them I'm going to order a new pressure switch that will handle 30amps. I'm also going to be doing some plumbing to make it more efficient.
